"PEACE"
BY WILLIAM WEEGE, 1969.
No place [San Francisco ?], 1969. Original lithograph on handmade laid paper measuring 21.75 inches by 17.75 inches. Titled, signed & dated by the artist in pencil in the margin just below the image.
Condition:
Modest edge wear including a couple of nicks, unobtrusive horizontal fold across the bottom of the image, a bit wrinkled, with occasional short soft creases, lightly spotted, still very good or better.
Please see photos.
A stark and visually quite compelling image which seemingly depicts a hippie family although elements of the old west are incorporated as well. Perhaps a scene at a commune?
William Weege (American, 1935 - 2020) cut his teeth on the West Coast in the late 1960's where
his posters, often promoting counterculture & and opposition to the Vietnam War,
"appeared on the streets of San Francisco and soon covered the walls of every young hipster's pad"
(~Wisconsin Visual Art  Achievement Awards ).
His works are held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
