, a rare, original, 1973 Redistricting Plan map for the City of Indianola, Mississippi, in Sunflower County, and check my store, as I have one more, similar, related map for sale. Ships rolled in a hard tube. Measures about 22" x 16.5" Has a notation on back from the original owner, "Obtained frm Sunf. Co. clerk Sam Eli - his office in Indianola Mar 23, 1973 Sunflower Co., Miss." Sam Eli was the Circuit Clerk in Indianola in 1973. According to an excerpt from an interview with Margaret Kibbee, September 12, 2008 (you can find it on a google search), she said:
Kibbee:… Well, of course, once we got a new circuit clerk, then we could actually register people to vote. In other words, they passed the Voting Rights Act after I got here. It didn't matter at the time, but then, a little bit later, we had a circuit clerk who recognized the law and then people could get registered to vote.
Interviewer: What was the clerk that recognized the law?
K: Oh, Sam Eli. He's in a wheelchair. I saw him a few months ago, he's still around. He's not the circuit clerk, but anyway, as the circuit clerk, he did recognize the law. So, anyway, then people started registering to vote. So, you knew it was very difficult to get black people into office at first, but it started happening. It started happening.
This comes from one of those civil / voting rights stories about an individual who made a difference by doing the right thing (following the law / Voting Rights Act), allowing Black citizens to register to vote and how that person's actions made a difference!
Map from the estate of an individual who was involved in the civil rights / social justice movements of the 1960s, 1970s, and beyond! He collected all kinds of political, presidential, local/state/national buttons, stickers, ephemera going back to Eisenhower. The original owner/collector frequently marked years, dates, and other information on the backs of items collected. If you'd like more information for the sake of provenance, please ask! Out of respect, I don't want to identify the individual on eBay! I have more posters and items from this estate which will be listed soon, if they are not already!
Redistricting in the U.S. is the process of drawing electoral district boundaries. A congressional act enacted in 1967 requires that representatives be elected from single-member districts, except when a state has a single representative, in which case one state-wide at-large election be held.
For conditions, please review photos closely using the magnifying tool or zoom in. Photos will give best idea of overall condition.
