    It was designed by
    Don Rebele
, and believed to have been sold between 1975-1985.
Qwip Systems was a division of Exxon Office Systems Company from 1975 until 1985.
Today, Surviving examples of these Exxon QWiP machines can be found as Museum artifacts at: the COOPER HEWITT Smithsonian Design Museum, TEMPE
HISTORY Museum, in Tempe, AZ, and the Henry Ford Museum of Innovation (Not on exhibit to the public).
The Qwip 1200 revolutionized the facsimile business in the United States. Prior to the Qwip’s entry into the market, facsimile machines were similar in size to copy machines. This newly portable model typically sold on a monthly lease program to allow for future upgrades, and transmitted documents in a matter of minutes.
The Qwip was an early telephone-transmission fax machine. To transmit a document, two people would establish a telephone voice connection--a document attached to the drum of one fax machine, blank paper to the other. The transmitting Qwip read the document line by line, converting image into sound. The receiving fax then reassembled the sound back into a printed image.
The Qwip was advertised with these tag lines:
“Qwip versus Zip” (to emphasize the speed of facsimile over mail).
“How customers send purchase orders back to suppliers cross-country (or crosstown) in minutes - over the telephone”
“The Machine that sends back electronic mail”
