In anticipation of Montana, that 41st State being added as a star to the American flag, a very few companies went ahead and produced American flags with 41 stars before Independence Day, when additional stars were customarily added for the states that joined the union in the previous year - However, several more states joined the union by then, making the 41 Star American Flag a real rarity, since it was not in keeping with the way stars were meant to be added to the flag.
Point of Intetest: When men went off to serve our country at war, naturally, they left their homes, families, wives, and coveted special collectibles such as their accumulated tobacco felts behind. Many of the wives left waiting for their husband's return compiled these quilts to keep busy during war time.
Not unlike "Crazy Quilts" made up of multiple colors, textures and designs of left over fabric remnants, these "Tobacco Felts Quilts" were made up of a multitude of tobacco industry incentives (premium tobacco felts and cigarette silks - sometimes also referred to as cigar felts), which were collected and cherished like baseball cards by the children and wives of gentlemen smokers. Only these Tobacco Felts Quilts have become far and away more historically meaningful and intriguing than the Crazy Quilts, as they tell a more dynamic illustrated story of the general time period in American culture from whence they came!
While we can't determine exact date this quilt was put together, we have a pretty close approximation based on the felts and silks that were sewn into it. The felts on this quilt range in date from the late 1800's into the first part of the 1900's.
