Description
You are bidding on a fully functioning, very well preserved Type I Curta mechanical calculator with serial number #38776. It is still fully functional and amazingly precise. You can easily perform additions, subtractions, divisions and multiplications in a few operations as per the instructions (you can find a copy of the original manual athttp://www.vcalc.net/cu.htm#manual
).
This specific unit will especially appeal to collectors and Curta afficionados as it is part of a very limited series to have its serial number engraved on the top row of the bottom plate instead of the usual bottom location. According to www.vcalc.net, only approximately 1800 units of type I Curtas were made this way.
This Curta still works perfectly.
ORIGIN OF THE CURTA
The Curta calculator was invented by Curt Herzstark and built by Contina AG Mauren in Liechtenstein between 1947 and 1972. It comes in two formats, Type I and Type II. The Curta you are bidding on is of the former Type and was build in 1953 according to the Curta I Date calculation formula found on the web site mentioned above.
CURTA DESCRIPTION
The body is very well preserved and shows no dents or scratches. You will find some very light wear on it (mostly on lower knurled base where it is held when in use
and baseplate
).
This Curta comes with its original metallic container. The container shows some signs of wear. It has done a great job of protecting the calculator over the years. Sorry, the original user's manual and other papers are long gone, but you can refer to Rick Furr's very detailed web site to download a PDF copy:
