    Description

Antique British OOW Telescope by Amstay, London
Officer Of the Watch (OOW) telescopes were required for the deck officer in the British navy and were made according to a common design for a very long period  This classic telescope is by Thomas L. Amstay of London and is in excellent functional condition. It appears comprised of original parts with the exception of the leather wrap on the main tube, which is contact cemented modern pigskin. Authentic or not, this black leather matches the silver coloration of telescope. The draw and the sunshield move smoothly and threads are solid. The metal in the scope appears to be nickel plated brass as revealed through worn off plating and there is a corrosion spot shown in the last image.
The telescope has good optics that work almost as well as they did on the day the telescope was made. It forms a clear sharp image when focused by moving the smallest draw to the appropriate position. The condition of the objective lens was so exceptional, an image of the detached lens in its lens mount has been included.
The scope is about 16 inches long when folded, 25 inches long when extended and has an objective lens with a diameter of about 1 1/4 inch. It can be dissembled for cleaning if that should become necessary. Be sure to examine the images as they form an important part of the description.
Although shipping is listed as economy, items will generally be shipped priority if costs are comparable.   I will consider sending the telescope to restricted countries if a buyer seems responsible and assumes shipping risks.
