    Description

2 (Two) pinback buttons, from the F.S.M. (Free Speech Movement) at the University Of California, Berkeley, in 1965 to 1966.  The Free Speech Movement, led by Mario Savio as it's spokesman, used sit-ins, demonstrations, and speeches to get the attention of the U.C. Berkeley hierarchy for changes in university rules, to permit gatherings of students in the center of the university to speak about free speech, anti vietnam war, civil rights, and other subjects not permitted by university rules.  Eventually the protests turned into violent demonstrations between students and Police at the university, and the whole country watched the events unfold on their televisions. These confrontations led to protests and demonstrations at university campus's all over the country.  The Berkeley students are credited with starting the movement at American Universities toward confrontation between students, faculty, and Police, which was a turning point in our history.  Both buttons are celluloid, 1" in diameter, blue and white, and manufactured by the Star Engraving Co. of San Francisco.  Very hard to find.
